Mesa State’s Coy selected to Daktronics All-American second team

Bobby Coy accomplished a lot in his football career with Mesa State College.

The junior running back added another honor this week, Daktronics, Inc. Division II All-American.

“It’s nice after a season when all that hard work and time in the weight room pays off,” Coy said.

“Someday I’ll look back and see the cool accolades and take pride in what I did.”

Coy has said he won’t return for his senior season, choosing instead to graduate.

“People have commented to me on it,” he said. “A lot have honored my decision and said it was a very professional, mature decision.”

Coy made the second team and was the only RMAC player to make the first or second team. Chadron State kicker Travis Atter and Fort Lewis linebacker Mark Meng were selected to the AFCA Division II All-America team.

Coy is a two-time All-RMAC first team selection and All-Region pick and was nominated for the Harlon
Hill Trophy, awarded to the Division II player of the year.

He set the Mesa State single-season rushing record this season with 1,600 yards and 12 touchdowns on 295 carries. He averaged 145.45 yards per game, which ranked third best in Division II.

He is tied for the most career rushing yards with Michael Vaughn at 4,161 yards. Coy accomplished those feats in 33 games. He missed two games in 2005 with an ankle injury, eight games in 2006 with a knee injury and two games in 2007 with a knee injury.

Abilene Christian’s Bernard Scott, one of three Harlon Hill finalists, and Northwest Missouri State’s LaRon Council are the Daktronics first-team running backs. Scott rushed for 2,156 yards and 28 touchdowns. Council ran for 1,640 yards and 35 touchdowns.

Jerry Seymour of Glenville State (W.Va.) made the second team with Coy. Seymour, a senior, led the nation with 2,282 yards.

Scott and Seymour were selected to the AFCA All-America team.
