Mesa trying to qualify for nationals

Colorado Mesa University is one round away from qualifying its entire women’s golf team for the NCAA Division II national tournament.

The Mavericks overcame winds that gusted up to 40 mph Monday to retain the lead in the Super Region 3 tournament in Elephant Butte, N.M., with Jennifer Hilts tied for individual honors.

Hilts struggled to a 10-over-par 82, but her first-round 73 allowed her to stay atop the leader board with Faylyn Beale of Western New Mexico at 11-over 155.

Mesa’s top four golfers are in the top 11, with Michelle Stripp tied for seventh after a second-round 80, giving her a two-round score of 161. Jessica Berve is one stroke back tied for eighth after a second-round 81, and Afton Balling is tied for 11th with a 164. She shot a second-round 86.

Mesa has a four-stroke lead over Augustana (S.D.) with a two-round 642.
