Mesa women win only one match vs. Dixie State

Kristen Kirby outlasted Lacey Hancock at No. 1 singles, but that was the only bright spot Thursday evening for the Colorado Mesa women’s tennis team in an 8-1 loss to Dixie State.

In the opening match of the Maverick Duals, which continue today and Saturday, the Trailblazers swept the three doubles matches, with Hancock and Yolena Carlon holding off Kirby and Emily Beckley 8-6 at No. 1.

In the top singles match, Kirby rallied after losing the first set to defeat Hancock 3-6, 6-2, 10-6. Carlon defeated Beckley in a similar marathon at No. 2 singles, 2-6, 6-1, 10-5. Carolena Campos took Dixie’s Kana Goldsmith to three sets at No. 6 singles, but lost 6-0, 2-6, 10-7.

Both the men’s and women’s teams play Colorado Christian and Metro State today.
