Mesa wrestling defeats Western State

Colorado Mesa redshirt freshman James Martinez pinned Matt Dunham and Trevor Donarski won by forfeit to lead the Mavericks to a 21-15 victory over Western State at Brownson Arena.

The Mountaineers won the first two matches to build a 6-0 lead, but Martinez tied the score in no time, pinning Dunham in 44 seconds in the 141-pound match. The Mavs won five consecutive matches to take a 21-6 lead and held on as Western rallied to win the last three matches.

Western State freshman Kyle Piatt of Olathe led the turnaround, defeating junior college national champion Nick Petersen 4-3 at 184 pounds.
