Mike the Headless Chicken Festival running crazy in Fruita this weekend

Mike the Headless Chicken, before the fateful cut, wields a cleaver above a birthday cake in honor of Fruita’s 125th anniversary, on the opening night of this year’s Mike The Headless Chicken festival. The rooster is portrayed by another Mike—16-year-old Mike Kochevar.

Head off to Fruita this weekend for the Mike the Headless Chicken Festival. This year’s theme is “Let’s Get Physical.”

The Mike Store, artisans and food vendors will open at 4 p.m. Friday, May 14, at the Fruita Civic Center, 325 E. Aspen in Fruita.

Pineapple Crackers will perform tunes for head bobbing beginning at 5:30 p.m. Friday, followed by a hair-raising event — an ‘80s big hair contest on the Civic Center Pavilion stage. Come with your hair already done, or stylists will be available at the event. The winner of the big hair contest will receive a prize from It’s a Girl Thang, a salon in Fruita.

That ‘80s Band will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, and vendors will close at 8 p.m.

On Saturday, May 15, visitors can fill their bellies at the Lions Club pancake breakfast from 7–10 a.m. at the IOOF Hall on Circle Park.

Mike’s May Madness Car Show opens at 7 a.m.

Registration for the 5K Run/Walk Like a Chicken with its Head Cut Off is from 7:30–8:30 a.m., with the race starting at 9 a.m.

Vendors will be open from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday. Don’t miss the lawn mower race at noon, or Peep-eating and wing-eating contests and egg toss at 5 p.m.

Entertainment starts on the Civic Center stage at 11:30 a.m. Saturday with The SwampCoolers. An ‘80s dance and chicken dance contest is at 12:30 p.m. Flat Top Reed performs at 1:30 p.m., Low Flying Knobs at 3:30 p.m. and Ralph Dinosaur at 7:30 p.m.
