Montrose edges Central in soccer action
Amanda Thoe scored the game’s lone goal in the 65th minute as Montrose edged Central 1-0 in Southwestern League girls soccer Tuesday.
The defense-minded Warriors (2-9-1) have now played six 1-0 games, winning two, and they also scored a 0-0 draw.
Central coach Jacob Pingel was pleased with the effort and says the team’s chemistry is starting to come around. The coach singled out freshman Hailey Keller for outstanding play on defense against Montrose.
Central goalie Marisa Brown had five saves in the game.
Glenwood Springs 5, Delta 1: A second-half offensive outburst pushed Glenwood Springs to a home victory. Five different players scored goals for Glenwood, including senior Lilly McSwain, who scored and had an assist.
Also scoring for the Demons were Jenna Brown, Lynsey Atkinson, Danni Benzel and Ellie Austin. Bella Diaz had seven saves in goal for Glenwood (8-2).
Grand Valley 2, Vail Mountain 1: Grand Valley (10-2) used a pair of Ashlynn Speakman goals to take a 2-0 lead at the half. Erin Schuckers had three saves in goal for the Cardinals.
Central won two singles matches and three doubles matches to defeat Aspen 5-2 on Tuesday at Central High School.
Central No. 1 singles player Aimee Basinski won 6-0, 6-3. No. 2 singles player Keira Trujillo won 6-3, 6-3.
The Warriors Nos. 1, 3 and 4 doubles won in straight sets.
Central’s No. 3 singles player, Abby Bridgett lost in a 10-point tiebreak after splitting sets.
Caden Woods had five hits, while Cameron Campbell hit a home run, drove in six runs and scored five times as Palisade pummeled Glenwood Springs 35-0 in 4A Western Slope League action Tuesday.
The Bulldogs (12-2, 9-0) scored at least four runs in every inning, including eight in the first and 10 in the third.
T.J. Tway and Easton Woods added four hits apiece to Palisade’s 24-hit attack, while Cody Higman threw three frames, and Devin Lucero tossed two in a two-hit shutout of the Demons (2-8, 0-5).
