Montrose falls to D’Evelyn in 4A Sweet 16
Ben Cruz and Cameron Jones had 18 points apiece for Montrose on Saturday, but it wasn’t enough as the No. 3 Indians lost, 72-64, at No. 2 D’Evelyn in the Sweet 16 of the Class 4A boys basketball tournament.
Montrose (20-5) also had 12 points from Nathan Hawley.
Luke Stratman had 28 points, including three 3-pointers, for D’Evelyn (22-2), which hit nine from beyond the 3-point line.
Class 4A girls
D’Evelyn 74, Delta 58: No. 5 Delta’s (20-5) run through the state tournament ended in a loss at No. 1 D’Evelyn (21-3) in the Sweet 16 of the state tournament.
Class 2A-District 5 boys
Meeker 70, West Grand 56: Cooper Smith scored 26 points to lead the Cowboys to the district title.
Meeker (20-1) will host a regional next weekend at Colorado Mesa University. The regional will include Del Norte, Lutheran and Telluride.
Hayden 73, Paonia 67: Paonia (7-15) lost to Hayden (15-7) in the consolation final.
Class 2A-District 5 girls
Paonia 69, Meeker 46: Carson Pipher had 24 points and Jessica Altman scored 17 points as Paonia won the district championship at Olathe High School.
It is Paonia’s fifth district championship in Coach Scott Rienks five years as the Eagles head coach.
Paonia (20-1) hit eight 3-pointers.
“I think (Meeker) was tired and we had a 14-point lead at halftime and cruised from there,” Rienks said.
Class 1A-District 1
Plateau Valley 57, Norwood 36: Doug Eberhard had 17 points and Teddy Grundy added 15 points and Plateau Valley (16-4) won the championship at Olathe High.
