Montrose finishes third in Eagle Valley Invite
Riley Willis roared back from a rough outing Tuesday to place second individually and help Montrose finish third as a team Wednesday in the 21-team Eagle Valley Invitational boys golf tournament.
The tourney was played at Gypsum Creek Golf Course, a par-72 layout that will host the Class 4A Western Regional in mid-September. That brought a bunch of 4A teams to the tournament to get a feel for the course that will decide state-meet qualifiers.
Montrose coach Angelo DeJulio said he felt good about the way his team played Wednesday, carding 235 strokes, and it was a good warmup for the regional.
“It also showed us we have our work cut out,” he said, as Steamboat Springs won Wednesday with 230 strokes, four strokes ahead of runner-up Montezuma-Cortez.
Willis led the way for the Indians, firing a 74 one day after carding an uncharacteristic 89.
“Riley did a nice job of bouncing back,” DeJulio said.
Tyrus Lopez added a 79 for Montrose, and teammates Zane Sauer and Glen-Michael Mihavetz tied at 82.
Rifle and Palisade tied for 11th, and each had a player place in the top 10. Palisade’s Skyler Miller shot a 75 to tie for fourth, and the Bears’ Teig Hauer tied for eighth with a 77.
Delta finished 13th and was led by Keaton Reiher, who matched Willis with a 74.
