Montrose, Grand Junction finish well at Southwestern League relays
Montrose High School won only two events, but the Indians finished second in six others as they won the 13-team Southwestern League Relays girls swimming and diving meet Saturday at El Pomar Natatorium.
Grand Junction also won two events and finished in the top three in six others as the Tigers placed second with 460 points, 18 behind the Indians. Fruita Monument was third with 393 points.
Montrose got wins from its 200-yard freestyle relay and 200 breaststroke relay, with Allison Foulk and Callie Storter swimming on both relays.
Grand Junction’s wins came from its 200 medley relay and 200 butterfly relay, with Kianna Colaizzi, Taylor Kidd and Marina Silva each swimming a leg on those relays.
Fruita won three events: the 100 freestyle relay, 100 medley relay and 1-meter diving crescendo relay. Hollie Collins was part of the 100 free and 100 medley wins.
Paonia reached the finals in 11 weight classes and won championships in five of them as the Eagles won the eight-team Delta Panther Invitational.
The Eagles got individual titles from Jesse Reed (126 pounds), Bo Pipher (132), Gunnar Chesnik (145), Ty Coats (152) and Zach Milner (160) and totaled 281.5 points.
Delta had eight finalists and two champions — Cordell Stroud (182) and Marcus Garcia (285) — as the Panthers finished second with 231.5 points. Garcia was selected the outstanding wrestler in the upper weights, and Durango’s Matthew Lavengood (120) was the outstanding wrestler in the lower weights.
■ Palisade finished 3-2 in duals at the Palmer Ridge Tournament. The Bulldogs reached the semifinals and lost by one point, 38-37, to Liberty, which was given the winning point on the eighth tiebreaker.
Palisade defeated The Classical Academy 41-39, Florence 53-29 and Palmer Ridge 57-24.
Randen Espinoza (106) and Caleb Clarkson (152) each went 5-0 for the Bulldogs.
■ Central finished with a 3-4 dual record at the Wasatch Intermountain Duals in Heber City, Utah. The Warriors’ wins were 36-33 over South Summit, 54-28 over Lone Peak and 47-27 over Brighton (Utah).
Riley Garner-Orr (113) had Central’s best record: 6-1.
Palisade got 11 points apiece from Skyler Miller, Jacob Bollinger and Zach Marengo as the Bulldogs routed Summit 62-34 in a Class 4A Western Slope League contest.
Palisade (3-2, 2-0 WSL) led 27-12 at the half.
Roosevelt 66, Central 57: Tyler Talkington made four 3-pointers and led Central (1-6) with 16 points in its final game of the Windsor Invitational.
Coal Ridge 42, Olathe 28: The Titans outscored Olathe 12-3 in the third quarter to pull away for a Class 3A WSL win.
Palisade outscored Summit 29-4 in the third quarter en route to an easy win in 4A Western Slope League.
Cruz Maestas led Palisade (4-0, 2-0 WSL) with 16 points. Abby Thiessen added 12 points, and Aspen Guray had 10.
Coal Ridge 42, Olathe 39: Theresa Tafoya and Taylor Gibson scored 11 points apiece for Olathe.
