Montrose opens at home in 4A state soccer

Southwestern League champion Montrose received a No. 13 seed and will host a first-round game of the CHSAA Class 4A state boys soccer tournament Thursday.

The Indians (9-5-1) will play 20th-seed Pueblo West (11-4) in the 32-team field. Start time will be set Monday.

The winner of the game advances to Saturday’s round of 16 against the winner of Thursday’s game between No. 4 Mullen (7-5-3) and No. 29 Vista Peak (9-4-2).

Meanwhile, Southwestern League runner-up Fruita Monument (8-6-1) made the 5A field of 32 teams but was granted no favors in CHSAA’s seeding meeting.

The Wildcats are the 31st seed and will play at No. 2 Denver East (13-2) in a first-round game Wednesday. Start time will be determined Monday.

The winner of that matchup will face the winner between No. 15 Highlands Ranch (8-6-1) and No. 18 Aurora Central (11-3) in a second-round contest Oct. 29.
