Montrose routed in season opener

COLORADO SPRINGS — Playing a game at its own school for the first time, Vista Ridge High School dominated Montrose 45-6 on Saturday in the season opener for both Class 4A schools.

Vista Ridge, which had played home games on the campus of two district rivals for its first two varsity seasons, jumped to an early lead with a pair of touchdown passes from Brayden Stewart to Aaron Johnson.

Montrose responded with a one-yard touchdown from Angelo Youngren, who ran 28 times for 180 yards, but that was all of the offense the Indians managed.

Brandon Cartagena found plenty of room to run in the second half for Vista Ridge, running for two long touchdowns on the way to 239 rushing yards.

Vista Ridge made its debut in Class 4A after posting an 18-5 record the previous two years in 3A.
