Montrose playoff soccer game postponed until today
MONTROSE — Sand Creek High School’s boys soccer team had travel issues Wednesday, prompting the Scorpions’ Class 4A playoff game at Montrose to be postponed.
The seventh-seeded Indians (12-0-3) were on the field Wednesday afternoon, warming up for their game against the No. 26 Scorpions (10-4-1).
Montrose Athletic Director Lyle Wright talked with Sand Creek officials at 3:49 p.m. Wednesday, 11 minutes before kickoff.
The team was in Gunnison, and school officials decided the bus couldn’t make it to Montrose in time for the game to be played before nightfall. Montrose’s soccer field does not have lights, so the game was rescheduled for 3:30 today.
Wright said the Scorpions apparently experienced travel troubles en route to Montrose from Colorado Springs. Wright said the team left at about 8 a.m. and was traveling over Monarch Pass about 1 p.m.
The Scorpions (10-4-1) reached Gunnison about 3:30 p.m. and called Wright to say they were running late.
“I think they took a wrong turn somewhere,” Wright said.
According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, road conditions on U.S. Highway 285 were icy and snow-packed roads, with blowing snow in some areas.
Durango’s Class 4A first-round game against Valor Christian was postponed until 3 p.m. today because of wet grounds.
In Class 3A, (11-4-1) Coal Ridge couldn’t overcome a 2-1 halftime deficit and lost 3-2 at Alamosa.
