Montrose senior Vickers signs letter of intent to play at Bryant

Jessica May Vickers has done plenty of traveling when it comes to tennis.

From the Southeast Asian island of Brunei and the Philippines to Las Vegas and Connecticut, Vickers has been all over the globe.

When it came to college tennis, Vickers decided a little more travel won’t hurt.

Wednesday, the Montrose High School senior signed a national letter of intent to play at Bryant University in Smithfield, R.I.

“We’ve worked on tennis since she was eight or nine years old,” Jessica’s father, Jay Vickers, said. “We’re really proud of her.”

Jay Vickers spent more than 20 years working overseas in Brunei, but moved to Montrose in 2007 to be closer to family. While in Brunei, Vickers played competitive tennis every where from Hong Kong to Malaysia.

Because of all the time spent traveling, geography wasn’t an issue during the recruiting process. She also received serious interest from the Naval Academy, Emory (Ga.) University and Eastern Washington.

“She wanted to play Division I,” Jay Vickers said. “She wasn’t really worried about any geographic restraints.”

Vickers will be joining a Bryant University team that began playing Division I tennis in 2008, and is currently competing in the Northeast Conference. Vickers won’t be the only Colorado tennis player on the team — Cherry Creek High School graduate Morganne Downing is a junior for the Bulldogs.

“I found the schools were all interested in her academics as well as her tennis,” Jay Vickers said. “It was a mix of the two things.”

Jay Vickers said May plans to major in environmental science and minor in business.

Vickers has one more season of high school tennis remaining. She has been the No. 1 singles player for Montrose the past two seasons and has compiled a 38-3 record with two regional championships. She’s made it to the quarterfinals of the state tournament twice.
