Montrose’s Barnosky nabs two 2nds at state swim meet
Montrose High School senior Michael Barnosky was good, but Longmont High’s Connor Dwyer was a little better Saturday at the Class 4A boys state swimming and diving championships.
As a result, Barnosky had to settle for second-place finishes in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 breaststroke.
Dwyer finished the breaststroke in 56 seconds flat. Barnosky followed in 56.72.
Barnosky placed second in the 200 IM in 1 minute, 55.41 seconds. Dwyer finished in 1:52.92.
Meanwhile, Montrose’s Kostya Callihan placed sixth in the 200 freestyle and 11th in the 100 butterfly, teammate Clay Zentmeyer was 12th in the 200 freestyle, and Drew Herder took seventh and Ryan Ormsbee 13th in the 1-meter diving.
Montrose’s 200 medley relay team placed third (1:37.37), its 200 freestyle relay team was sixth (1:30.33), and the 400 freestyle relay team was seventh (3:18.57).
■ The District 51 medley relay team tied for 15th place with Cherokee Trail in 1 minute, 43.71 seconds in the Class 5A state meet in Fort Collins.
The team of Austin Acree, Tyler Fair, Carlos Matthews and Eric Jacobs swam 1:42.27 in the preliminary.
class 3a Baseball
Olathe’s Class 3A state baseball title hopes ended Saturday with a 9-6 loss to Lamar in tournament action at Butch-Butler Field in Greeley.
Lamar (13-1) advanced to the semifinals next weekend. Olathe (17-7) was eliminated.
The Savages built a 9-1 lead and withstood an Olathe rally.
Lamar took advantage of a walk and a hit batter to take a 2-0 lead in the first inning. The Savages scored at least one run in each inning through the fifth.
Olathe scored three in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly, groundout and base hit.
Bryce Markley took the loss for Olathe. He was 2 for 3 at the plate with a triple and sacrifice fly.
Ben Kaylor was 2 for 4 with a double and Aaron Handke hit a double.
■ The Class 5A, 4A, 2A and 1A state playoff games in the Denver metro area were postponed because of rain.
The 5A and some of the 4A games were rescheduled for today.
The 2A and 1A state championship games were rescheduled for Monday.
Class 4A baseball
Montrose (18-4) plays D’Evelyn (16-6) at 10 a.m. today at Coca-Cola All-Star Park in Lakewood. The winner plays Air Academy (20-3) at 12:30 p.m. today at All-Star Park.
“It’s hard to say,” Montrose coach Landon Wareham said of how an extra day will impact the team. “We’re hanging out and will go watch a movie.”
“D’Evelyn is a good club,” Wareham said. “They are a solid group, but we can get them.”
Zane Hemond will start for Montrose, Wareham said.
Cheyenne Mountain (19-4) and Broomfield (19-4) play in the winners’ bracket at 3 p.m.
The other half of the losers’ bracket is rescheduled for Monday at All-City Field in Denver. Windsor plays Cañon City with the winner facing Longmont.
