Monument 9 and 10 year olds continue tough trek, head to Denver

To become state champions in the 9-10 year old Little League tournament, the Monument baseball team will have put in the road work, traveling nearly 1,000 miles for a title.

Today Monument opens its state tournament against North Boulder at Cherry Creek Little League in Denver, two weeks after Monument made the trip to Cortez and back after defeating Montrose 14-0 in the championship game.

“Coming out of Cortez, you know you are going to have to travel again,” Monument coach Daren Biggs said. “This is their first state tournament and getting to go over there and play is a real honor. They aren’t just good ballplayers, they are also good kids with good families.”

This Monument team won the 9-10 National district title last year, so it knew it had a chance to be a tough team when it went into the American District, which competes for a state title. Biggs said he lost a few players because of age, but retained a majority of the team.

“I think we all knew we had a chance to go back and do well,” Biggs said. “We had a lot of the leaders from the team back.”

What Monument did in Cortez is hard to duplicate, opening the tournament with a 32-0 blitzing of Orchard Mesa. Monument outscored its opponents 75-9 in the tournament.

Biggs said Monument’s strategy was to get the lead early and hold the lead with good defense.

“We took visitor every game because we knew we were going to put up some runs,” Biggs said. “We talked about putting the squeeze on right from the start and not letting go.”

If Monument gets past North Boulder in the first game, it will play the winner between Steamboat Springs and Cherry Creek. The tournament is double-elimination and is scheduled to end July 29.

“They are a really good bunch of kids who listen,” Biggs said. “They don’t make a lot of mistakes, and they’re gamers.”
