Morris breaks state record in 100 breast
Montrose’s Logan Morris set a Class 4A state swimming championships meet record Friday in the preliminaries of the 100-yard breaststroke at Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center in Thornton.
Her time of 1 minute, 3.98 seconds beat her own 4A state record of 1:04.03 set last season.
Morris today will go for her third consecutive 100 breaststroke state title.
“She was just really excited, and then she found out she swam faster than the top 5A breaststroker,” Montrose coach Ellen Erickson said. “Once she found that out, it was kind of lights out.”
Morris also will swim in the consolation finals of the 200 individual medley. She is seeded 12th.
Also for the Indians, Brooke Gaber will be in today’s consolation finals of the 100 breaststroke after swimming a 1:10.29, and the Indians’ 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays are in the consolation finals as well.
In the Class 5A state swimming championships at Edora Pool Ice Center in Fort Collins, Grand Junction’s Taylor Kidd was seeded eighth in the 200 freestyle but did not make it to today’s finals or consolation finals, finishing 34th.
But Grand Junction coach Janet Ryan said the Tigers’ 200 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay each finished ahead of six teams. Last season, those relays placed last, Ryan said.
“One thing we were proud of was our relays,” she said.
The Tigers will not have anyone swimming today.
