Myers’ clutch hit lifts Fruita to win

Fruita All-Stars pitcher Lauren reed has some interested spectators Thursday - the opposing team, Grand Mesa. Reed allowed five runs and seven hits as Fruita topped Grand Mesa 6-5 to force another title game tonight in the Major Girls Little League tournament.

It came down to the final at-bat and Karli Myers delivered in the clutch.

Myers needed a base hit and came through Thursday night with a bases-clearing two-run double to lift the Fruita Little League Major Girls All-Stars to a 6-5 victory over Grand Mesa. The teams play at 7 tonight for the District 1 championship at Grand Mesa.

“I was scared because there were two outs,” Myers said. “We’ve been coming to the last game for years and finally beat them. We’ve got to go out and win one more tomorrow.”

Myers was 3 for 4 with two runs scored in the game and reached base on an error.

Fruita pitcher Lauren Reed limited Grand Mesa to five runs on seven hits and struck out four.

Grand Mesa rallied from a 4-1 deficit to take a 5-4 lead in the top of the sixth inning.

9-10 Girls: Melissa Gellerman threw a complete-game no-hitter, struck out 10 and drove in the final two runs to lead Orchard Mesa to a 10-0 victory over Grand Mesa for the district title.

“In the fourth inning, I went out to talk to her and I thought about pulling her,” Gellerman’s father and coach Rich Gellerman said. “She said, ‘Nope. I’m finishing it.’ That’s exactly what I needed to hear from her.”

Orchard Mesa advances to the state tournament in two weeks in Westminster.

9-10 A Boys: Grand Mesa hung on for a 5-4 victory over Monument to advance to the district final in Montrose.

Fruita defeated Montrose 12-2 in the losers’ bracket and plays Monument at 7 p.m. today. The winner advances to the final to play Grand Mesa.

9-10 B Boys: Monument Blue defeated Grand Mesa 6-5 to advance to the championship game.

Monument Gray eliminated Palisade 33-2 and will play Grand Mesa at 7 tonight. The winner advances to play Monument Blue in the district final.

10-11 Boys: Monument advanced to the championship game with a 5-3 victory over Montrose.

Montrose plays Palisade tonight for a chance to play Monument in the championship game. Palisade eliminated Three Rivers 13-0.

Major Boys: Grand Mesa scored a run in its last at-bat to defeat Cortez 3-2 in Cortez. Orchard Mesa defeated Montrose 15-5 in four innings in the other game.

Monument plays Orchard Mesa and Grand Mesa plays Fruita at 5:30 p.m. today.

Junior Boys: District 1 advanced to the final, defeating Three Rivers 14-10.

Colorado River Valley eliminated Fruita 13-3 in the losers’ bracket and plays Three Rivers at 7 tonight.
