New center to offer arts classes in Fruita

There will be a little bit more of the arts in Fruita starting in January.

Creative Avenues, an arts education center at 128 S. Fifth St., and School District 51 have teamed up to offer art, theater and dance education as extracurricular classes at Rim Rock Elementary beginning in the spring semester. Creative Avenues owner Joy Potter said she has wanted to expand to Fruita for a while.

The new classes will fill a void in arts education that Fruita has lacked, she said.

“The rec center offers dance classes, but there isn’t really a whole lot there,” Potter said.
“Luckily, Tami is very supportive of the arts.”

Tami Kramer, principal at Rim Rock, said she agreed with Potter on the need for more arts-related classes in Fruita and is excited to see the classes offered at her school.

“There just are not a whole lot in Fruita,” Kramer said. “We’ll try a couple classes and see how it goes.”

The art classes are mixed media and available for students from kindergarten to seniors in high school. According to the Creative Avenues Web site, the classes will cover several mediums including drawing, charcoal, pastels and painting with watercolors.

The classes will meet Thursday night and will be divided into kindergarten to fifth grade from 6 to 7 p.m. and another for sixth grade to 12th grade from 7 to 8 p.m.

A hip-hop and jazz class will also be held Thursday night, according to the Web site, for second-graders to high school seniors.

Potter said one of the more exciting offerings will be the Thursday night play production class, where students write a play of their choosing and put it on.

“The kids sit down with the teacher and write the play they want to put on. The play is theirs from start to finish,” she said. “They get very into it.”

The drawback to expanding to Fruita, Potter said, is she will have to require a minimum enrollment in the classes to offer them.

So hopefully the classes fill up, she said.
