New ministry hosts block parties in Fruita

Kids enjoyed the sack races Monday night at the first block party in Fruita hosted by the new Sojourn Ministries.

Mike Banks believes most religions have concentrated their recruiting efforts in large metro areas and many small towns, such as Fruita, aren’t receiving the religious opportunities available to them.

He and his wife, Kellie, recently relocated to Fruita from Ohio to help establish Sojourn Ministries, a new church which is affiliated with the Colorado Baptists.

“With less than seven percent of people in Colorado going to church on a regular basis, people in small towns are not necessarily reaching out to tell them the good news about Christ,” Banks said.

Currently, the new church has 10 regular members which meet weekly at the Banks’ home. They are hoping to have a more traditional meeting place soon and are actively recruiting new church members.

They began introducing themselves to the community last night at a free block party at Prospector Park in the Comstock Subdivision.

More than 100 people came to the park for free hot dogs, bump-n-jump, snow cones and popcorn. There were sack races and other games for the kids.

“This is very low-pressure,” Banks said, “We just want people to know that we are in town and ready to be a part of the community.”

Sojourn Ministries will host other free Fruita events this week including a block party from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight at Reed Park. Another will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Olga Anson Park in the Vista Valley Subdivision.

A free Friday night concert featuring Caballero Sound will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Fruita Civic Center. Free Dominos pizza will be available while supplies last.
