NPS director denies bike race request on Monument

National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis denied a revised request Monday to stage part of the Quiznos Pro Challenge Bike Race on Colorado National Monument next year.

“Closing the park to accommodate the needs of a commercial bike race goes against our management policies, would adversely impact park resources, and would deny access to the park to other visitors,” Jarvis said. “Federal law and NPS policy restrict commercial activities in national parks to those that are ‘necessary and appropriate’ to park purposes.  This bike race is neither necessary nor appropriate in the park. Superintendent (Joan) Anzelmo made the right call.”

Monument Superintendent Anzelmo said she wasn’t sure what the director would decide, but she is pleased with his final decision. John Hopkins, a member of a local committee hoping to bring the bike race to Grand Junction, said the committee will meet this week or next to discuss whether to re-entertain the idea or try to bring the race to another spot in Mesa County.
