OA: Free Family Skate Nights offered at Glacier Ice Arena

Instead of fretting over politics on election night, Glacier Ice Arena is offering something active in lieu of massive amounts of TV watching and stress.

What better way to get away on Tuesday, Nov. 4, than to do something free for the whole family.

That’s right, free.

Glacier Ice Arena started its Free Family Skate Nights last month to much success. On the first Tuesday night of every month the ice arena offers free admission and skate rentals for the whole family from 6:40–8 p.m. Helmets and baby sleds also are available. You’ll only pay for concessions.

“Have a night out on us,” said Margie Peacock, a Glacier employee.

“It’s all about the kids,” said Ray Johnson, Glacier general manager.

“It really is,” Peacock replied.

Glacier plays kid–friendly music such as the “Hokey Pokey,” “YMCA” and disco and offers line dancing on skates like the Cha Cha Slide and the ever popular limbo game.

“We had quite the line for the limbo,” Johnson said of the October Free Family Skate Night.

During that evening, 150 to 200 people took to the ice. It was busy, but not crowded, Peacock said.

“We get a lot of people out here who are new and have never skated before,” she said.

The ice arena’s owners and employees started the free skate night to boost awareness of what the arena offers and introduce ice skating to people who may not have tried it before.

Last week, Michelle Tribble had her son’s 11th birthday party at Glacier. She said her family would be very interested in the Free Family Skate Nights.

“It allows them to have fun in a safe environment,” Tribble said.

On the free nights, the arena offers mini skate lessons taught by junior coaches.

“It’s a healthy activity,” Peacock said. “It’s good exercise.”

You’ll want to keep moving, too. It’s a brisk 47 degrees inside the arena.

To warm up skaters, the concession stand offers hot food such as pizza, hamburgers, nachos, pretzels and steaming cups of coffee and hot chocolate.

On the Free Family Skate Nights the arena also offers special family meal deals. Glacier can easily be
accessed off Riverside Parkway.
