Orchard Mesa falls to Texas in SW Regional
A rough start proved to be too much for the Orchard Mesa Major Girls to overcome Thursday in the Southwestern Regional in Waco, Texas.
The Elgin (Texas) Little League team scored nine runs in the first two innings to defeat Orchard Mesa 16-10 in the first round.
Megan Rubalcaba struggled with the location of her pitches, walking one and throwing three wild pitches in her two innings of work. The Orchard Mesa defense didn’t help its pitchers, committing seven errors in the loss. Eleven of Elgin’s 16 runs were unearned.
Melissa Gellermann relieved Rubalcaba and kept Elgin at bay in her two innings, allowing the Orchard Mesa bats to come around. Orchard Mesa scored three runs in the third inning on a bases-loaded walk to Hailey Schaneman, an RBI single by Harlee Roberts and an error.
Elgin scored four runs in the fifth and added three more runs in the sixth off Schaneman, who relieved Gellermann in the fifth.
Trailing 16-4, Orchard Mesa scored six runs in the sixth inning, with Shaneman getting the key hit, a two-run single.
Harlee Roberts went 2 for 3 and Schaneman finished with three RBI for Orchard Mesa, which falls into the losers’ bracket and plays Lubbock Youth, the Texas West representative, today at 5 p.m.
