Outlaws’ Rodriguez takes second at Rocky Mountain Nationals

Colorado Outlaws Club wrestler Isaac Rodriguez took second place in the Rocky Mountain Nationals tournament last weekend in Denver.

Rodriguez wrestled in the 15-under, 130-pound division. He was one of six Outlaw wrestlers to place in the tournament.


Colorado Peace Ride dates changed

The Colorado Peace Ride in Telluride has been forced to move to July 29-Aug. 1 because of a conflict with a Phish concert in town. More than 18,000 fans are expected to attend the concert, which had event organizers concerned about the safety of the riders.

The bike tour is a 238-mile loop around the San Juan Skyway, and benefits several charities in the Telluride area. Information: http://www.ThePeaceRide.com.

Mesa County teams perform well

The Mesa County Women’s Basketball Association hosted the Mesa County Classic this past weekend.

The sixth grade girls, coached by Dave Montoya, finished 4-2, losing in the championship game to Moffat County.

The seventh grade all-stars, coached by Darren Spomer, finished 4-2, but won the division by defeating Montrose in the championship.

The eighth grade all-stars, coached by Frank Wilkinson, finished 6-0, and defeated Montrose for the championship.

Fort Lewis advances to title game

Fort Lewis College will play Emporia State for the NCAA Division II national championship on Friday after claiming a 79-64 victory over Franklin Pierce (N.H.) in Wednesday’s semifinal game.

Emporia State defeated Gannon 97-94 in overtime in the second semifinal game.

The Skyhawks (35-3) limited Johannah Leedham, the two-time Division II player of the year, to 13 points.

Fort Lewis led 40-29 at halftime and built its lead to 20 in the second half behind its 3-point shooting. Alison Rosel led Fort Lewis with 22 points and Laura Haugen, who hit 4 of 8 from the 3-point line, had 19. Katie Mackey added 11 and Abby Jackson 10.

Fort Lewis, which shot 54 percent from the field, hit 11 of 23 from the 3-point line and scored 18 points off turnovers.

In the men’s Division II quarterfinals in Springfield, Mass., Central Region champion St. Cloud State defeated Midwestern State (Texas) 92-88 to reach today’s semifinals.
