Owlz pound GJ Rockies
When the Grand Junction Rockies started to battle back Monday night, Orem pushed its lead further out of reach.
Then the Owlz put it away.
Ryan Seiz hit a grand slam in the first inning and the Owlz added nine runs in the second to down the Rockies 15-8.
It was Grand Junction’s second straight loss and the fourth in five games. Orem won its seventh consecutive game.
Seiz’s grand slam put the Owlz up 4-0 as Orem batted around during the first inning. Then Orem opened up scoring in the second.
Four straight singles by Orem scored two runs, and a throwing error by Rockies third baseman Kevin Padlo scored two more. Bo Way hit his second single of the inning and third of the game to score two more runs. Back-to-back triples cleared the bases.
Orem tacked on two more runs in the third inning.
Way finished 3 for 4 with two RBI. Raul Linares also pitched in for the Owlz, going 2 for 4 with a triple and three runs, pushing his average to a team-high .406.
Harrison Musgrave took the loss for Grand Junction, giving up eight runs — six earned — in 1 1/3 innings. Musgrave also had three walks.
Sam Howard had the longest outing of the five pitchers used by Grand Junction, allowing two runs over three innings with one strikeout and one walk. The Rockies walked seven batters.
Grand Junction rallied in the middle innings.
The Rockies scored two runs in the fifth inning, thanks to a triple from Omar Carrizales and Renaldo Jenkins scoring before an inning-ending double play.
Jenkins was selected the Pioneer League player of the week on Monday after hitting .452 last week with a home run, triple and four doubles. He drove in three runs and stole three bases.
After rallying for three runs with no outs in the top of the sixth, Padlo was thrown out trying to score on a fly ball to left field to derail the Rockies.
Hamlet Marte’s single scored Jenkins to cut the deficit to 15-8.
From the fourth inning on, the Grand Junction pitching evened out. Howard, Taylor Black and Matt Pierpont combined to hold the Owlz scoreless over the final five innings.
Grand Junction will face Orem today at 7:05 p.m. Javier Palacios will get the start for the Rockies.
