Padlo’s double lifts GJ Rockies past Idaho Falls
Kevin Padlo hit a three-run double in the fifth inning to give Grand Junction the lead for good as the Rockies defeated Idaho Falls 7-3 in a Pioneer League baseball game shortened to seven innings by rain Wednesday.
After rain led to the suspension of Tuesday’s opener of a four-game series in Idaho Falls, the Rockies and Chukars were supposed to play a doubleheader Wednesday, going nine innings in Game 1 and seven innings in Game 2.
Instead, they will play a doubleheader today. The first game starts at 5 p.m.
The game resumed Wednesday in the third inning with the Rockies leading 2-0.
Wes Rogers had led off the game Tuesday with a home run, and Grand Junction (38-22, 15-7 second half) added a run in the second when Wesley Jones scored on a throwing error.
The Rockies began Wednesday with a run in the third as Rogers scored on a single by Luis Castro for a 3-0 lead.
The Chukars (31-29, 11-11) tied the game 3-3 with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, setting the stage for Padlo.
Max George singled, Castro walked with one out, and Dom Nunez singled to load the bases. Padlo scored all three with a line drive to center field.
The Rockies scored their final run in the top of the seventh as Nunez doubled in Rogers with one out. Padlo followed with a walk, and then the rain started falling, leading to the game being ruled official about an hour later.
Javier Palacios threw four innings in relief of Sam Howard, who threw the first two innings Tuesday and didn’t allow a run on three hits.
Palacios got his fifth win, allowing three runs on six hits. He didn’t allow a walk and struck out four.
