Palisade boys fall to Pueblo East

Pueblo East’s Dylan Gavin scored 26 points Friday night and TJ Gradisar added 15 in a 65-50 win over the Palisade boys basketball team in the second round of the Class 4A state tournament.

The Eagles (19-5) led by 10 at halftime, 35-25 and were never challenged in the second half in advancing to the Sweet 16.

Palisade (15-10) got 16 points from Zach Marengo.

Mead 57, Rifle 39: Mead outscored Rifle 19-5 in the second quarter to take a big lead it never relinquished in the second round of the Class 4A state tournament. The Mavericks hit six 3-pointers in the game and were led by James Maher’s 14 points. Tanner Quick scored 13 points to lead Rifle (18-5).

Paonia 57; Rangely 46: The Eagles play Meeker, which defeated West Grand 70-56, today in the Class 2A District 5 championship game at Soroco.

Girls Basketball

Palisade’s season came to an end in a 61-49 loss to Pueblo West in the second round of the Class 4A state tournament.

The Bulldogs (16-9) got 11 points from Casey Brown, nine from Ashlyn Brown and seven each from Jenna Brown and Christa Brown.

After falling behind 19-11 at halftime, Palisade tried to claw back into it, trailing 34-28 entering the fourth quarter. Pueblo West, though, outscored Palisade 26-20 in the fourth quarter to advance to today’s Sweet 16.

Broomfield 64, Rifle 20: The top-seeded Eagles (24-0) only allowed the Bears to make five field goals in the game and never allowed Rifle to score more than eight points in a quarter in a dominating win in the second round of the Class 4A state tournament.

Broomfield shot more free throws (27), than Rifle had points in the game. Chante Church led Rifle (11-12) with 10 points, eight coming from the free-throw line.

Mullen 45, Montrose 34: Tied 19-19 at halftime, the Mustangs outscored the Indians 12-1 in the third quarter in the second round of the Class 4A playoffs. Kaitlin Ammermann and Stephanie Rowan each scored nine points to lead Montrose. Emily Thorp added five points.

Paonia 49, Hotchkiss 28: The Eagles play Meeker, which defeated Soroco 62-45, today for the Class 2A District 5 title at Soroco.
