Palisade football team runs past Glenwood Springs

Cameron Tucker had three short touchdown runs Friday night and Austin Bernal added an 8-yard scamper as Palisade High School’s football team rallied from an early deficit for a 35-20 victory at Glenwood Springs in the Class 3A Western Slope Conference opener for both teams.

Tucker scored on runs of 2, 3 and 3 yards and Terrance Williams had a 17-yard scoring run that put the Bulldogs (4-2, 1-0 WSC) up
14-7. His 69-yard run set up Tucker’s second TD run of the game. Bernal’s touchdown came after the Bulldogs recovered a fumble deep in Glenwood territory near the end of the third quarter.

Miguel Herrera’s 11-yard touchdown run with 6 minutes, 20 seconds remaining pulled the Demons (3-3, 0-1) within 28-14 before Tucker’s third touchdown sealed it.

The Bulldogs had 411 rushing yards and were led by Williams, who had 206 yards on 14 carries.

Montrose 28, Vista Ridge 21: The Indians (4-2, 1-0 4A Pikes Peak Conference) never relinquished the lead after taking a 14-0 first-quarter lead.

Rifle 42, Battle Mountain 21: The Bears (5-1, 1-0 WSC) scored 21 unanswered points to snap a 21-21 tie with the Huskies (2-4, 0-1) to win their conference opener.

CROSS COUNTRY

Brothers Evan and Sean Graff of Montrose finished first and second, respectively, at the Delta Pantherfest Invitational at Confluence Park.

Evan, a senior, won in 15 minutes, 53.53 seconds, with Sean following in 16:10.62. The brothers’ performances helped the Indians finish third in the team standings.

Central’s Tyman Smart was the Warriors’ top finisher, taking third in 16:10.83. Central’s Ivory Espinoza was District 51’s top female finisher, taking eighth in 18:42.96.

VOLLEYBALL

Cedar Mitchell’s 11 kills weren’t enough in Plateau Valley’s
26-24, 18-25, 25-15, 25-16 loss to West Grand in Collbran. Kassidy Wilkerson added five kills and five aces for the Cowboys (4-7, 2-6 2A/1A Western Slope League).

Durango 3, Montrose 0: Durango (9-3, 3-0 Southwestern League) rolled to a 25-6, 26-24, 25-22 win over the Indians (6-8, 2-3).
