Palisade’s Hughes, Wells sign to play in Rangely

There was never any question Zac Hughes and Tiffany Wells wanted to continue playing baseball and softball.

The issue was, where?

The Palisade High School seniors announced Wednesday they will play their sports of choice next year at Colorado Northwestern Community College in Rangely.

“I’ve always had a dream to play college baseball,” Hughes said. “I didn’t even know if I was going to make it through high school. It worked out pretty good and I’m excited.”

Hughes originally went to Central High School, but struggled there, relocated to Palisade and has flourished.

“I’ve learned a lot baseball-wise at Palisade,” he said. “I’ve grown so much. It was the best decision I ever made.”

The first baseman and catcher is hitting .353 with five doubles and 10 RBI in 34 at-bats for the Bulldogs (10-6) this season.

Wells had a other choices, but decided on CNCC in large part to be close to family.

“Family is really important to me,” Wells said. “I had opportunities to go to a college six hours away. That’s scary. I’ve always been around my family and my mom is my rock. It will be hard to leave her, but I’ll come back and see her and talk to her, so it’s nice.”

Wells enjoyed her visit to the campus.

“At first it was the money, then you go and spend some time with the coaches and I got to meet the teammates,” she said. “It was really fun. It was easy to go somewhere you feel comfortable.”

The first baseman and shortstop hit .473 with six doubles, two triples and 18 RBI in 55 at-bats for the Bulldogs (14-8) this past fall.

Wells hopes to study nursing, but will focus on completing her prerequisite classes at CNCC.

Hughes wants to study criminal justice.
