Panthers cruise past Longhorns

Delta High School running back Damon Jensen scored three touchdowns and quarterback Kole Roberts threw for a pair of touchdowns Friday night as the Panthers cruised to a 42-7 nonconference victory against Basalt at Delta.

Jensen, Delta coach Ben Johnson said, had close to 200 rushing yards and three runs of 50-plus yards for the Panthers despite the Longhorns (1-2) using an eight-man front on defense. Wide receiver Beau Byers also had a pair of TD receptions for Delta, which led 28-0 at halftime.

Delta plays a nonconference game against Palisade at Stocker Stadium on Thursday.

Grand Valley 41, Roaring Fork 6: Jeff Holbrook threw for 193 yards and three TDs and also ran for a score as the Cardinals (2-1) doubled their win total from a year ago at the expense of the Rams (0-3).

Paonia 39, Ridgeview Academy 0: The Eagles (3-0) remained unbeaten with the rout in Watkins.


Grand Junction rallied from a one-goal deficit with four consecutive goals in a 4-2 Southwestern League victory at Montrose.

Montrose (2-4, 0-2 SWL) held a 1-0 halftime lead, but Abram Sanchez scored twice and Jake Chaffetz and Sam Flynn also scored to give the Tigers (6-1, 2-0) the lead for good.

It was the sixth consecutive victory for the Grand Junction after the Tigers opened the season with a loss at Air Academy on Aug. 26.

Friday’s game was also full of fouls — the teams combined to receive 12 yellow cards, with Grand Junction accumulating five yellows and a red card.


Reannon Baskin had eight kills and Abby Thiessen had 16 digs and five aces for Palisade in its 25-20, 25-8, 25-15 nonleague win over Cedaredge at Palisade.

Emily Tucker and Christa Brown each added five kills and Gracey Higman had 20 assists for the Bulldogs.

Fruita Monument 3, Pueblo West 2: The Wildcats (7-4) won for the sixth time in their past seven matches with their 25-23, 22-25, 25-20, 22-25, 15-12 victory against the Cyclones.

Riley Snyder had 20 kills, Dana Thomson added 11 kills, MacKenzie Wells had 35 digs and Truth Hafey added 43 assists in the victory for Fruita.

Paonia 3, West Grand 1: The Eagles (6-0, 3-0 2A/1A Western Slope League) beat West Grand 23-25, 25-22, 25-20, 25-19.


Central’s Jared Leblow and Talon Berta tied for 11th place to lead the Warriors in the Division I race of the John Martin Cross Country Invitational in Fort Collins.

Leblow and Berta each finished in 16 minutes, 31 seconds, helping the Warriors place seventh in the 12-team meet.

Karla De La Cruz, who finished 30th in the girls race in 20:55, was the Warriors’ best female finisher.


Kaitlyn Jackson’s two-out, two-strike single in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Rifle a 6-5 victory against Cedaredge.

It was the second walk-off hit of the year for Jackson, whose two-run home run against Eagle Valley earlier this month gave the Bears (10-3) a 3-2 win.

Jackson also got the win in the pitcher’s circle, allowing one earned run with seven strikeouts in seven innings.
