Plewe, Keltz both shoot 77s in 1st round of SWL Championships
Dolores High School’s Kiselya Plewe and Montrose’s Kala Keltz finished Monday’s opening round of the Southwestern League Championships girls golf tournament with matching 77s.
A scorecard playoff gave Plewe the Day 1 edge, but the two have another day to settle the score.
With a tie at the top and Palisade’s Kate Shuman finishing third with an 85, the two-day league meet got off to an exciting start at Hillcrest Golf Club in Durango. Play resumes today at Conquistador Golf Course in Cortez.
Two-day tournaments offer an atmosphere similar to next month’s state meet, Durango coach Kirk Rawles said.
“It’s kind of the way state is run,” he explained. “Since it’s a two-day scoring deal, if you didn’t have your best day today, maybe you can make up some ground tomorrow.”
Further, second-round pairings will be based on how golfers scored in the first round, much like at the state tournament. That means Plewe, Keltz and Shuman will all tee off in the same group today.
Nine teams from throughout the Western Slope took to the Hillcrest course on Monday, with Montrose scoring tops in the team standings with a 261. Central finished 16 strokes back at 277, with Grand Junction third (284) and Dolores fourth (295). Palisade finished in a tie for fifth with Durango (296), and Rifle (303), Fruita Monument (314) and Gunnison (316) rounded out the team scores.
Rifle’s Taylor Walters was fourth in the individual standings with an 87 on the par-71 course, with Montrose’s Madison Gill and Sam Medina tying for fifth with 88s.
While Monday’s play was confined to teams from Colorado, a handful of New Mexico teams will join in for today’s second round at Conquistador.
