Police trying to decide whether to press charges against protesters

Police said Tuesday they still are determining whether to press charges against a group of protesters who jumped in front of a motorcade carrying Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin during her Grand Junction visit Monday night.

Spokeswoman Kate Porras of the Grand Junction Police Department said the protesters acted criminally because they were told by police prior to the incident that lawful protesting meant remaining on the sidewalk.

“Unfortunately they did not do that,” she said.

Police are reviewing videotape of the incident that occurred at the intersection of 12th Street and North Avenue when protesters stood briefly in the road behind a large banner before being pushed away and down to the ground by police. No one was injured, and the motorcade was not stopped, police said. Police on motorbikes riding in front of the motorcade set down their bikes and pushed protesters out of the way of the oncoming vehicles.

Porras said protesters weren’t arrested immediately Monday because police had to continue with the
procession.

Names and identities of the protesters won’t be released unless arrests are made, Porras said.

Video of the incident circulated widely Tuesday on CNN’s Web site and YouTube.com, a video-sharing Web site.
