Poor start dooms Wildcats vs. Knights
The Fruita Monument High School girls basketball team couldn’t come back from a cold first quarter Friday, losing 54-44 to Fairview in Boulder.
The Wildcats scored only five points in the first quarter and was down nine points, which they couldn’t overcome.
The two teams combined for 40 fouls, resulting in 60 free-throw attempts. Fruita finished 17 for 23 from the line; Fairview went 19 for 37.
Sarah Hensley led the Wildcats (1-1) with 17 points, hitting three 3-pointers and going a perfect eight for eight from the free-throw line.
Taylor Johnson recorded 11 points, stepping out and hitting one 3, and Stephanie Long added eight points, half coming at the free-throw line.
The Knights’ offense was led by Sierra Bender, who scored 12 points. Cassie Corrigan added eight points and Maya Singer and Carlee Lough each scored seven.
After trailing 14-5, the Wildcats tried to get back in the game, outscoring Fairview by one point in the second quarter to trail 24-16 at halftime. The Knights eased the lead to 35-25 in the third quarter and matched the Wildcats point-for-point in the fourth.
The Wildcats travel to Louisville today to take on Monarch High School at 1 p.m.
