Rifle controls tempo, beats Delta

Rifle took an 18-6 lead after the first quarter Friday night and maintained control thereafter to beat Delta 50-35 in a Class 4A Western Slope League game.

“They were just pretty good, man,” Delta coach Von Mitchell said of Rifle. “They got the lead and stretched us. ... After they got up, they kind of dictated the tempo. ... We made a run and got within eight in the third quarter, but they kept their poise and answered.”

Mitchell compared the Bears’ approach on offense to NFL quarterback Peyton Manning orchestrating time-consuming scoring drives for the Denver Broncos.

“They definitely won the time of possession,” Mitchell said.

Wyatt Robinson led Rifle with 15 points and Ryan Whiteside led the Panthers (6-7, 4-3 WSL) with eight.

Montrose 67, Montezuma-Cortez 48: Angelo Youngren scored 12 points to lead Montrose to a Southwestern League win over Montezuma-Cortez. The Indians held Brackin Whiteskunk, the SWL’s second-leading scorer, to only five points.

Hotchkiss 57, North Park 35: Chris Allen scored 16 points to lead the Bulldogs (9-3, 3-0 WSL) to a Class 2A/1A Western Slope League win.

Hotchkiss led 18-4 after one quarter, and Allen, a 6-foot-6 center, was part of the inside game that Bulldogs coach Kyle Crowder said set the tone.

“We came out and hits some shots, and they didn’t have much inside, and we dominated inside,” Crowder said. “We dominated the offensive boards a lot.”

Paonia 60, West Grand 54: The Eagles outscored West Grand 13-2 in the third quarter to take control.
