Trujillo, Wells lead GJ to Northglenn title

Grand Junction had an individual champion in Jacob Trujillo and a runner-up in Kohlby Wells among its eight semifinalists as the Tigers won the 19-team Northglenn Norse Invitational wrestling tournament Saturday.

Trujillo (15-1) took first at 160 pounds, winning a major decision, 12-4, over Gateway’s Deyaun Trueblood (26-2).

Wells (18-7), who has battled injuries this season, had his best performance of the year, losing 6-3 in the final at 120.

The Tigers got five third-place finishes — Cody Lacy (113), Jeremy Latham (126), Isaac Rider (138), Louis Guillen (145) and Robbie Gonzalez (285) — and a fourth-place finish from Tyler Zook (220).

Zook lost in the semifinals to Regis Jesuit’s undefeated Grant Neal, the 5A state champ at 195 last year.

Allison said the Tigers dropped a few close matches to excellent wrestlers, and overall he was happy with the way the team performed.

“For the most part it was a strong day. They wrestled about as well as they did all year today,” he said.

Paonia Screaming Eagle Invitational: The host Eagles won the 16-team tournament with 257 points and Cedaredge was second with 194.5.

Paonia had seven individual champions: Josh Altman (120), Jesse Reed (126), Bo Pipher (132), Ty Coats (152), Zach Milner (160), William Austin (182) and Tony Darling (285). The Eagles also had two runners-up: Logan Schopp (170) and Trevor Smith (195).

Meeker, which finished third with 190.5 points, had two champions: J.C. Henderson (138) and T.J. Shelton (170).

Cedaredge had one champion, Landon Eckhart (195), and Palisade had one champ, Randen Espinoza (106).

Top of the Rockies: Central finished 28th out of 31 teams at the Top of the Rockies tournament, considered the state’s toughest wrestling tourney. Arvada West won the team title with 192 points and Thompson Valley was second at 151.5.

Jacob Haydon went 3-2 at 160 and Soloman Jarman was 2-2 at 182.

Rifle Duals: The host Bears went 5-0, defeating Basalt 66-6, Grand Valley 63-18, Gunnison 69-6, Hotchkiss 53-24 and Moffat County 45-27. Delta won four duals, beating Basalt 66-9, Gunnison 66-12, Hotchkiss 63-17 and Moffat County 48-27.


Boys Basketball

Balanced Bulldogs beat West Grand


Four players scored in double figures as Hotchkiss defeated West Grand 72-59 in a Class 2A/1A Western Slope League game.

Chris Allen led the Bulldogs (9-3, 3-0 WSL) with 19 points, and Andrew Tiedeman scored 17, River Panish 15 and Clayton Oxford 12.

West Grand took a 16-8 lead in the first quarter, but the Bulldogs rallied to go up 23-20 at the quarter break, then took control by outscoring the Mustangs 23-8 in the second quarter.

Hotchkiss coach Kyle Crowder said his players started getting offensive rebounds, and Clayton Oxford made a couple of steals to spark the turn-around.

“We got a lot of momentum going,” he said, “and in the second quarter we got them to take a lot of bad shots, and they only made three shots.”

The Mustangs made nine 3-pointers, six by Casey Gore, who finished with 24 points.

Paonia 67, North Park 43: The Eagles (9-4, 4-0 2A/1A WSL) took a 10-point halftime lead, then pulled away in the second half. North Park dropped to 2-9, 1-5 WSL.

Moffat County 77, Grand Valley 68: The Bulldogs (8-2, 6-1 3A WSL) built a 12-point lead going into the fourth and held off the Cardinals (6-5, 5-3 WSL).

Sam Parker scored 24 points to lead Grand Valley, and Tyler Scott added 16 points and 14 rebounds.

Cedaredge 35, Olathe 29: The Bruins (6-6, 4-5 3A WSL) kept Olathe winless.

Delta 55, Battle Mountain 37: The Panthers improved to 5-3 in the Class 4A WSL and 7-7 overall. Battle Mountain dropped to 4-9, 0-7 WSL.

Meeker 80, Plateau Valley 23: Meeker (9-3, 4-0 Class 2A/1A WSL) led 52-15 at the half, then shut out Plateau Valley (2-8, 0-3 WSL) in the third quarter.

Durango 51, Montrose 48: The Demons improved to 3-1 in the Southwestern League, 7-5 overall. Montrose dropped to 6-7, 1-3 SWL.


Girls Basketball

Christa Brown leads Palisade to easy win


Christa Brown scored 20 points to lead Palisade to a 54-24 victory over Summit in a Class 4A Western Slope League game.

“Christa showed up for us really big tonight,” Bulldogs coach Danielle Bagwell said, adding the 5-foot-10 freshman scored in a variety of ways.

Palisade (8-5, 5-3 WSL) limited the Tigers (3-9, 0-8 WSL) to a combined seven points in the middle two quarters.

Aspen Guray added 11 points for the Bulldogs.

Grand Junction 62, Montezuma-Cortez 19: Grand Junction held Montezuma-Cortez (0-11, 0-3) scoreless in the first quarter to take a 15-0 lead and cruised to the Southwestern League win.

Sarah Wilkinson’s 10 points led the way as 13 players scored for the Tigers (14-1, 3-1 SWL).

Montrose 49, Durango 28: The Indians improved to 9-5, 4-0 SWL, and Durango dropped to 3-9, 1-3 SWL.

Meeker 58, Plateau Valley 44: Meeker took a 20-8 lead after one quarter and led 36-17 at the half of the 2A/1A WSL contest.

Taylor Neilson led Meeker (11-1, 3-0 WSL) with 17 points, and Sierra Reynolds led Plateau Valley (5-5, 0-1 WSL) with 22 points.

Paonia 74, North Park 13: Ashley Vanvleet scored 15 points and had nine rebounds, and Carson Pipher had five steals and five assists to lead Paonia (11-3, 4-0 2A/1A WSL).

Grand Valley 58, Moffat County 40: The Cardinals (8-3, 7-1 3A WSL) blew open a four-point game at the half by outscoring the Bulldogs 19-6 in the third quarter. Moffat County dropped to 6-4, 4-3 WSL.
