Seven Warriors score in romp over Cortez
The Central High School soccer team showed plenty of offensive versatility in Friday’s 8-0 win over Montezuma-Cortez at Long Family Memorial Park.
The Warriors (4-1, 2-0 Southwestern League) got goals from seven different players.
Cory Rhodes led Central with two goals and was joined in scoring by Brady Carroll, Matt Miller, Alain Bucio-Barrios, Mario Matias, Cesar Matias and Jesse Lopez.
The defense limited Cortez to three shots, all saved by goalie Antonio Tarin.
Palisade easily sweeps Moffat County
Palisade took little time in a 25-13, 25-13, 25-6 win at home against Moffat County in the team’s Western Slope League opener.
The Bulldogs (6-2, 1-0 WSL) allowed only 32 points.
Shannon Rhodes led Palisade with 23 assists. Audrey Steinkirchner had four blocks, 13 kills and five aces.
Central (3-5, 1-0 SWL) lost in five games at home against Glenwood Springs, 27-25, 20-25, 19-25, 25-22, 19-17.
Rayleigh Norton had 36 assists and Kimber Baker 22 kills for Central.
Fruita (9-1, 1-0 SWL) defeated Battle Mountain 25-17, 25-18, 25-13.
Straight-set wins the norm for GJ vs. Demons
Grand Junction swept Durango 7-0, getting a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles from Spencer Weinberg over Ryder Searle. The rest of the Tigers followed suit with wins in straight sets.
No. 2 singles player Tate Hegstrom won his match against Clay Haidaris 6-0, 6-0, as did the No. 3 doubles team of Matthew Prinster and Aaron Gossage in their win over Wesley Komick and Blake McDaniel.
Central defeated Montezuma-Cortez 5-2 at home.
The Warriors swept the singles matches, but lost the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches.
The No. 1 doubles team of Ryler Colunga and Lael Nordstrom came back in their match to win. After losing 6-4 in the opening set, the Warriors won the second set 6-3, then won the tiebreaker 10-6.
