Quick leads Rifle past Palisade and into district final
Rifle High School’s Tanner Quick was too much for the Palisade boys basketball team to handle Friday night in the semifinals of the Class 4A Southwestern/Western Slope League district tournament.
Quick scored 23 points, including nine in the fourth quarter, as Rifle pulled away for a 52-43 victory at Brownson Arena. Rifle plays Durango at 11:30 this morning at Brownson for the district title. Palisade faces Montrose at 2:30 today in the Bulldogs’ gym in the third-place game.
The Bears outscored Palisade 14-7 in the third quarter to extend their 21-17 lead to 35-24, but the Bulldogs hit three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to try to make up ground. Palisade outscored Rifle 19-17 in the final quarter, but couldn’t overcome the low-scoring third quarter.
Trent Brown finished with 10 points for Rifle. Zach Marengo led the Bulldogs with 14 points and Marques Combs added eight.
Durango 46, Montrose 42: The Demons’ 27-18 first-half advantage held up despite the Indians’ second-half push.
Dane Mestas led Durango with 17 points and Isiah Mayberry added 10, and the Demons held on to reach today’s title game against Rifle.
Montrose’s Kyle Freeburg hit a pair of second-half 3-pointers and Cole Auker scored six of his eight points in the second half to lead the Indians’ comeback attempt.
The Montrose defense shut out Palisade in the fourth quarter to rally past the Bulldogs 30-27 and reach the Class 4A Southwestern/Western Slope League district title game.
The Bulldogs missed two free throws in the fourth quarter and couldn’t get a field goal to fall. Stephanie Rowan hit her only bucket of the game in the fourth quarter for the Indians, a key 3-pointer, as Montrose scored seven points to overcome a 27-23 deficit.
Elisa Hill led the Indians with 11 points. Christa Brown had nine points to lead Palisade, which plays Rifle for third place at 1 p.m. today at Palisade High School. The Indians play Glenwood Springs for the championship at 10 a.m. at Brownson Arena.
Glenwood Springs 43, Rifle 29: The Demons scored 19 points in the fourth quarter to advance to the district title game.
Hailey Armstrong scored seven of her 12 points in the fourth and Delaney Gaddis scored six of her seven points in the final quarter to pace the Demons.
Rifle’s Chante Church led all scorers with 23 points.
Steamboat Springs 43, Delta 39: A pair of fourth-quarter 3-pointers and hitting six of eight free throws allowed the Sailors to break a 31-31 tie and move into the fifth-place game this morning against Durango, which beat Eagle Valley 59-47.
Cedaredge 59, Roaring Fork 47: Alyssa Isaman scored 20 points and Nellie Freeman added 13 — 11 in the second half — to lift the Bruins past the Rams.
Maddie Nieslanik led Roaring Fork with 16 points.
