Rafferty lifts Central to win
Laurel Rafferty threw a seven-hitter with one walk as Central High School opened its softball season Thursday with a 6-0 victory over Fairview.
Rafferty also helped her cause at the plate in the second inning by driving in the Warriors’ first two runs with one of her two hits.
“She had good command of her pitches,” Central coach Scott Else said. “I’ve been preaching just put the ball in play because we have a pretty good defense, and she only had one walk.”
Amber Walters joined Rafferty with two hits and two RBI and Tyler Hays and Taryn Smith each hit a double and drove in a run.
The Central, Grand Junction and Palisade high school boys golf teams got in 15 to 16 holes of golf Thursday in Pagosa Springs, but in the end they all left town empty-handed.
Rain and lightning caused the cancellation of the final few holes of the 12-team tournament at Pagosa Springs Golf Club, according to Grand Junction coach Tom LeFebre, and because the tourney was a shotgun format, there was no salvaging any kind of team or individual scores. Nor do Thursday’s holes count toward a team’s regular-season limit, meaning schools have the option to schedule another 18-hole tourney to fill the void left by this cancellation, LeFebre said.
