Regis hires former Mesa AD Spicer

Since being hired as Colorado Mesa’s athletic director in 2013, Tom Spicer has seen numerous teams win RMAC titles, including seven this season. Due to “philosophical differences” with CMU President Tim Foster, Spicer, seen here in a 2014 file photo, will not return as AD.

When he was hired at Colorado Mesa, Tom Spicer said he didn’t believe in retirement.

After leaving CMU in May over “philosophical differences” with President Tim Foster, Spicer didn’t stay unemployed long.

Monday, Regis University announced in a press release his hiring as the associate athletic director for advancement.

“I am very appreciative of this opportunity to work with David (Spafford, Regis’ athletic director) and everyone associated with Regis University,” Spicer said in the release. “Our goal is to enhance Regis University’s mission while developing new resources for future needs.”

Spicer will be involved in fundraising at Regis, both principle and major gifts, the university announced. His duties will include managing fundraising campaigns, oversight of athletic gifts and assisting with corporate sponsorships.

“As we continue to plan athletics participation in the university’s comprehensive fundraising campaign, we are fortunate to have someone of Tom’s experience in college athletics and the Front Range in particular, to advance our mission, goals and objective as a department and university,” Spafford said.

Spicer was hired in March of 2013 to run Colorado Mesa’s ever-expanding athletic department, which has 26 NCAA sports, the most in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, and added men’s and women’s triathlon this fall.

Mesa won 20 RMAC titles and 13 conference tournament championships in his tenure. The Mavericks won the RMAC All-Sports Cup in each of his first two years, an award given to the department that wins the most championships in a school year.

Regis is the fourth RMAC school for Spicer, who was previously the athletic director at Colorado Mines and former conference member Fort Hays State.
