Roling to play for the Rockies
Sports top ten story No. 05
Kiel Roling grew up an Atlanta Braves fan.
But growing up in Grand Junction, Roling couldn’t help but pay attention to the Colorado Rockies. He recalls thinking to himself how it would be cool to play for the Rockies someday.
“I always thought it would be cool to be able to play professional baseball in front of family and friends,” Roling said.
On June 5, the Central High School graduate’s thoughts became a reality when he was the 197th pick of the 2008 MLB draft — going to the Rockies in the sixth round, the Daily Sentinel’s No. 5 sports story of the year.
“It was an overwhelming process,” Roling said. “It was amazing to get drafted.”
Roling, a catcher, spent this past fall in the developmental league and is back in Grand Junction working out and preparing for spring training.
