Rose helps Montrose beat GJ

Montrose broke open a close game with three goals, all by Alec Rose, in a six-minute span Tuesday to defeat Grand Junction 5-1 in Southwestern League boys soccer.

Greg Shawcroft’s goal put the Indians (5-2-2, 4-0-1) up 1-0 midway through the first half, but Josh Murdock’s goal at the 38-minute mark pulled Grand Junction into a tie.

Early in the second half, Vijay Singh scored the game-winning goal, and Rose scored twice on headers and once with his foot, the final one in the 71st minute, to conclude the scoring.

Tyler Cayo made seven saves for the Indians.


Fruita Monument (5-4, 4-1) got nine kills apiece from Eiley Durham, Jordan Eatwell and MacKenzie Schuller as the Wildcats defeated Central 25-22, 25-17, 25-18 in a Southwestern League match at Central.

Emily Sanburg had 15 kills, Shea Neill had 24 digs and Lindsey Rummings had 22 assists as Montrose (6-4, 2-1) defeated Grand Junction 25-10, 27-25, 25-16.

Fruita Monument’s dual with Montrose was postponed because of inclement weather.
