The Gold Helmet Award winner in football also is the Southwestern League All-Conference’s Player of the Year in baseball.

Grand Junction senior Sean Rubalcaba was named the conference’s top player on Sunday after a season in which he batted .577 in 78 at-bats with 15 doubles, three triples and 24 RBI.

“It’s pretty neat,” said Rubalcaba, who is headed to the University of Northern Colorado to play football. “There’s a lot of good players in this league, so I’m happy people think I’m worthy enough to be player of the year.”

Grand Junction finished 13-7 and lost to Ralston Valley, 3-0, in the first round of the Class 5A District 3 playoffs.

Montrose coach Landon Wareham was named coach of the year after guiding the Indians to a 16-5 record and an appearance in the Class 4A state playoffs.

Wareham credited his assistant coach and father, Brent Wareham, who has been coaching about 35 seasons, and pitching coach Dan Reardon, as reason he was named coach of the year.

“I thought we did a good job of competing all year long,” Wareham said. “It’s too bad we didn’t play that way over the hill.”

Wareham added Rubalcaba was deserving of his award.

“It was more than deserving in my opinion,” Wareham said. “Him and (Durango’s) Easton Garcia are great players along with all those other kids. (Rubalcaba) produces. The kid’s an athlete.”
