Rubalcaba leads GJ girls past scrappy Central

In its final game of the regular season, the Central High School girls basketball team was down by only eight points heading into the final quarter against Southwestern League-leading Grand Junction, but fell to the host Tigers, 48-34.

Shafer Rubalcaba led Grand Junction (18-3, 8-1) with 14 points. Sydni Brandon added 13 points for the Tigers, making 10 of 14 from the free-throw line.

D’Kota Brodie paced Central (5-17, 1-9) with 13 points.

“Our girls kept their cool through the rough play, because it was rough,” Grand Junction coach Sam Provenza said. “We had to work to get ahead. (Central) has improved a lot since the last time we played them.”

Grand Junction hosts Fruita Monument at 5:30 p.m. Friday in a game that will decide the league championship. If the Tigers win, they are the league champion. If Fruita Monument (16-6, 7-2) wins, the Wildcats will be co-league champions along with the Tigers and Montrose (15-4, 8-2).

Grand Valley 72, Basalt 30: Haley Johnson’s 16 points led the Cardinals (14-5, 12-4 3A Western Slope League).

Eagle Valley 48, Battle Mountain 28: Seventh-seeded Eagle Valley advanced to a district tournament quarterfinal vs. second-seeded Delta at 3 p.m. Thursday at Brownson Arena.

Boys basketball

Joe LyBarger made two free throws with 2.9 seconds left as ninth-seeded Battle Mountain edged eighth-seeded Montezuma-Cortez 54-52 in the opening round of the 4A Western Slope League/Southwestern League district tournament in Palisade. The Huskies (9-11) play top-seeded Durango (14-5) in a 7:30 p.m. Thursday quarterfinal at Brownson Arena.

Montrose 53, Summit 31: The seventh-seeded Indians advanced to a 4A district quarterfinal against second-seeded Palisade at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Brownson Arena.
