Saad, two Tigers reach state golf
Two Grand Junction High School golfers came through in a playoff Monday to qualify for the Class 5A state golf tournament.
Freshman Donny Kinnaman carded a birdie and senior Garrett Fante shot par on the playoff hole in the Northern Region tournament at Olde Course in Loveland to qualify for state Oct. 3-4 at Bookcliff Country Club.
Fante and Kinnaman finished in a seven-way tie for the last five qualifying spots with a six-over-par 78.
“It’s disappointing not getting the team qualified when you’re hosting state at Bookcliff,” Grand Junction coach Tom LeFebre said. “Then we went from thinking we’d have two qualify to possibly none.”
The two Tigers qualified along with Fruita Monument senior Joey Saad, who tied for third with a 75. Fruita junior Will Berg shot a 79, missing the playoff by one stroke.
“Joey played well,” Fruita coach Dave Fox said. “It will be nice for him to play state on his home course.
“Will had a good round, but struggled on the back (nine). He is disappointed. He worked hard on his game.”
Grant Rogers of Boulder defeated Brandon Gayezki of Mountain Range and Nathaniel Goddard of Fossil Ridge in a playoff for medalist honors. They each shot 73.
Fossil Ridge won the regional team title with a 229. Greeley West took second at 233.
Both teams qualified for state, along with the top 13 individuals not on those teams.
Grand Junction finished seventh, but was only seven strokes back of Fossil Ridge with a 236.
Fruita Monument was 10th with 241 and Central was 14th with 258.
Bryan Harvey led Central with an 84.
