Sailors slip past Palisade
The Steamboat Springs High School football team scored three touchdowns in the second half Friday night to rally past Palisade 28-21 in Steamboat.
The victory gave the Sailors (5-0, 4-0 Western Slope Conference), ranked No. 1 in Class 3A by MaxPreps this week, the lead in the conference standings.
Palisade (3-3, 3-1) took a 14-7 lead with a touchdown at the end of the first half.
After trying to establish a ground game in the first half, “(Steamboat) came out in the second half and threw the ball,” Bulldogs offensive coordinator Matt Borgmann said.
Sailors quarterback Austin Hinder hooked up with receiver Jack Spady on a 35-yard score midway through the third quarter. The University of California commit scored on a 7-yard keeper just before the end of the quarter to put Steamboat ahead 20-14.
The Bulldogs took a 21-20 lead on a 2-yard run by Terry Williams less than two minutes into the fourth quarter, but Joe Dover scored his second touchdown of the night on a 1-yard run with 6:06 remaining as the Sailors reclaimed the lead.
With 3:49 remaining, the Palisade offense was stopped one yard short on fourth and 3 and Steamboat ran out the clock.
The loss broke a three-game winning streak for the Bulldogs.
Jesse Brannon finished with 93 yards rushing and two touchdowns; Williams ran for 60 yards and Sean Dunn for 40.
“Our kids played tough,” Borgmann said.
Palisade travels to Delta next Friday.
