San Jac wins 1st game in Southern District
San Jacinto (Texas) College-North scored one run in the bottom of the 13th inning on a bases-loaded groundout Sunday to beat Paris College 5-4 in its first-round game of the Southern District junior college baseball tournament in Mount Pleasant, Texas.
The first day of the tournament was rained out Saturday, but Sunday, defending national champion Navarro College blanked Alvin 5-0 and Blinn College downed Texarkana 11-6.
Northeast Texas played Galveston late Saturday night in the other first-round game as teams moved closer to qualifying for the 55th annual Alpine Bank Junior College World Series.
Western: Lamar College won the Region 9 title 6-3 over Northeastern Junior College to advance to the Western District tournament in Salt Lake City this weekend. Salt Lake Community College won the Region 18 title and will host the district tournament, with Central Arizona and Western Nevada also making the field.
Gulf: Fourth-ranked Polk State (Fla.) College won the district title.
South Central: Delgado (La.) Community College scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 10th inning Sunday to down Meridian (Miss.) 4-3 in the Region 23 championship game. The Dolphins beat Meridian 14-1 in a rain-delayed game Sunday morning. Delgado joins Eastern Oklahoma in the district tournament at Jefferson (Mo.) College May 18-20.
Northern: Top-ranked Iowa Western (54-4) won the Region 11 title 18-4 over Indian Hills and John A. Logan won the Region 24 title. Both teams advance to the district tournament at the Region 4 winner, being played at South Suburban (Ill.) College.
East Central: The Region 17 tournament in Decatur, Ga., was postponed by rain Saturday and Sunday. Walters State (Tenn.) won Region 7 and plays May 18-21 at the Region 17 champion.
Eastern: Spartanburg (S.C.) Methodist won Region 10 and hosts Harford (Md.) Community College, which won the Region 20 title by beating Potomac State (W.Va.) 8-1 in the title game.
Southwest: Howard College routed Grayson College 11-1 Sunday night in driving rain to advance, along with Cisco, which beat New Mexico Junior College 7-2 in the winners’ bracket. Hill College was eliminated by Clarendon 5-1 and Western Texas knocked Weatherford out with a 3-0 win. Clarendon plays New Mexico and Western Texas plays Grayson in elimination games today, with Cisco playing Howard in the winners’ bracket.
Central: Neosho and Coffeyville play in today’s championship game in Wichita, Kan. Both teams beat Cowley on Sunday to eliminate the Tigers.
Southeastern: Sunday’s games in Ozark, Ala., were rained out, with Wallace State-Dothan playing Chattahoochee Valley and Alabama Southern facing Central Alabama when play resumes today.
