Serving cyclists’ needs: riders create bike shop big on customer service

Brent Steinberg of LTR Sports, 2470 F Road, Unit 3, stands behind a bike in the shop. Steinberg and fellow cyclist Mike Driver are catering to a need in the Grand Valley - a quality cycling enthusiast shop.

Brent Steinberg sells winter cycling clothing this time of year at LTR Sports. The shop has bicycle parts and clothing available for purchase.

Brent Steinberg and Mike Driver heard several cyclists clamoring for a bicycle shop that could quickly meet their needs.

After successfully putting on criterium races and cyclocross events last year, the cyclists opened LTR Sports, 2470 F Road, Unit 3, in the Patterson Center.

“We’re more of a cycling enthusiast shop,” Steinberg said. “Someone that rides two to six times a week needs it back that night so they can ride again.”

The shop is open six days a week at 7 a.m. and has “shop rides” on Sundays regardless of weather conditions. The shop has been open since November.

The shop offers maintenance tune-ups, including a free 25-point inspection.

“It’s letting people know they have a month left to go on their chain,” Steinberg said. “High customer service is the big thing for us. This is what we saw a need for.”

LTR Sports is in discussion with bicycle manufacturers and plans to offer road and mountain bikes for sale by the spring.

The shop has bicycle parts and the entire line of clothing available for purchase, including cold weather gear.

In addition to bicycles, parts and clothing, the shop is offering clinics, classes and rides.

They include an indoor trainer series with training workouts and a personal cycling coach.

LTR Sports offers a Kreitler Rollers riding seminar.

Cyclists can bring their own bicycle, load it on the roller and learn the aspects of the perfect roller riding technique.

A training clinic is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Jan. 29 with certified cycling coach Dr. Richard Price. The clinic will include basic training, aerobic, anaerobic training with power and nutrition advice.

Two maintenance classes are scheduled (7 p.m. on Jan. 26 and Feb. 23) for cyclists to learn how to keep their bicycle in proper working order. The February class is for women only.

There are 45 members on the team. Steinberg races mountain bikes.
