Several top Rockies brass will attend GJ Rox game
Colorado Rockies owner Dick Monfort, possibly his brother Charlie, and nearly 125 members of the Colorado Rockies’ organization will attend tonight’s Grand Junction Rockies game against Idaho Falls.
Chief Financial Officer and general counsel Hal Roth will be in attendance, as will Vice President of Communications Jay Alves. General Manager Dan O’Dowd will not visit Grand Junction.
Tim Ray, general manager of the Grand Junction Rockies, said the Advanced Rookie affiliate will host a barbecue for the major league visitors. Grand Junction Rockies players and staff members will mingle with the Colorado Rockies’ contingent, then Monfort and his entourage will watch the game from the stands.
“Sporadically, over the last three years, we’ve had members of the (Grand Junction Rockies) ownership group and staff members of the Colorado Rockies’ organization visit us,” Ray said. “But for many, this will be their first time visiting us. When we’re in the middle of our season, they’re also in the middle of theirs, so it can be hard for them to get away. We’ve finally been able to pull everything together, and we’re excited to see everybody.”
Ray said having another minor league affiliate in Colorado strengthens the bond between the major league club and the state, adding he is most excited to showcase the facilities and players.
“At this level, everything is hands-on,” he said. “That’s not always the case at other levels. Here you can put your arm around a player, ask him to sign something for you, and I think that’s a big reason our fan base is so strong. I think we have a pretty great environment here and have an absolutely beautiful stadium to showcase as well.”
