Seward County (Kan.) marches to JUCO for second time
Seward County (Kan.) Community College won the Central District tournament Monday to qualify for the Alpine Bank Junior College World Series.
This is the Saints’ second trip to the World Series. The first came in 2004.
The Saints (44-18) defeated Colby (Kan.) Community College 5-2 in the championship game Monday afternoon.
“I’m so excited,” said Seward County coach Galen McSpadden, who won his 1,000th game earlier this season. “I told the guys, ‘This will be the highlight of your life.’ “
Seward County scored three runs in the first inning and added two more late in the win.
Keegan Hucul shut down Colby in relief, limiting the Trojans to no runs on two hits in five innings.
Tyler Hill, who is from Arvada, was 4 for 5 and drove in an insurance run in the seventh.
Southern: Navarro (Texas) College advanced to the district final with a 4-1 victory over San Jacinto College-North.
The Bulldogs (41-17) play the survivor of the losers bracket this afternoon for the title. Their challenger will have to beat Navarro twice to claim the Southern District title.
Alvin eliminated Blinn on Monday night with 7-6 win. San Jacinto plays Alvin today.
Northern: Iowa Western Community College won the Region 11 title, defeating Marshalltown 9-1.
The Reivers advance to the Northern District tournament, hosted by the Region 24 champion John A. Logan (Ill.) College (35-17). The Volunteers defeated Wabash Valley (Ill.) College 2-1 in the Region 24 final.
South Suburban (Ill.) College, Triton (Ill.) College and Kishwaukee (Ill.) College are playing for the Region 4 title and the third spot in the district tournament.
East Central: South Georgia College defeated Middle Georgia College 11-9 to advance to the Region 17 championship game. With Monday’s win, South Georgia earned a spot in the East Central District tournament this weekend.
The Tigers will join today’s opponent, Georgia Perimeter College, in the district tournament with Walters State (Tenn.) Community College and Columbia State (Tenn.) Community College.
Western: No. 1 ranked Central Arizona College hosts the district tournament beginning Thursday.
Lamar Community College, Salt Lake (Utah) Community College and Yavapai (Ariz.) College are also in the tournament.
South Central: Delgado (La.) Community College plays Eastern Oklahoma State College and Jefferson (Mo.) College this weekend for a berth in the World Series.
Eastern: Potomac State College of West Virginia hosts Pitt (N.C.) Community College in a three-game series this weekend to determine the East qualifier.
