Six Fruita Monument wrestlers headed to state
Fruita Monument High School qualified six wrestlers for the Class 5A state tournament next week.
Anthony Martin (285), Matt Remy (215), Jarritt Winegardner (171) and Kyle Hamaker (160) placed second. Logan McNulty (145) and Jeff Gonzales (130) took third place.
Fruita’s Joe Leigh (189) placed fifth and lost a wrestleback to qualify for state.
Central took third in the Region 3 tournament and qualified seniors Matthew Gurule (112), Jaqub Gurule (119), Willy Holdren (145), Zach Short (152) and Jaron Sparks (189) for the state tournament.
Matthew Gurule was pinned by Pine Creek’s Josh Martinez in the 112-pound final.
Holdren and Short placed third and Sparks was fourth.
Jaqub Gurule placed fifth and defeated Cherry Creek’s Brad Tellis 4-2 in a wrestleback.
Grand Junction’s Dylon Thompson (103) and Jessie Hoffschneider (140) qualified for state with second-place finishes.
Palisade qualified 10 wrestlers for the state tournament with a second-place finish in the Western Regional.
Roosevelt took first place with 277.5 points. The Bulldogs had 238 points. Montrose was third with 200, Rifle was fifth with 119 and Delta took sixth with 99.5.
Palisade’s Justin Ray (112 pounds) and Daniel Salazar (119) won regional titles.
Wesley Shingleton (145), Nick Stephanus (215), Joey Dupre (285), Marcus Vincent (135), Terry Williams (140), Casey Thornton (125), Eddie Vial (160) and Mason Day (130) all qualified for state.
Montrose qualified eight wrestlers. Bryce Gaber (171), Jordan Passehl (189) and Braxten Franz (215) won regional titles.
Rifle’s James Martinez won the 140-pound title and was one of six qualifiers.
Delta had four qualifiers and Glenwood Springs had one.
Olathe qualified 12 wrestlers to win the Western Regional title with 240.5 points.
Zach Shank (119), Brenton Martinez (130) and Kyle Piatt (152) won regional titles.
Hotchkiss placed second (166.5) with eight state qualifiers, including regional champions Caleb Wyatt (160) and Kyle Douglass (215)
Grand Valley was fifth (121.5) with five qualifiers, including regional champs Jerrod Busch (135), Jared Tonder (140) and Ryan Gallegos (145).
Cedaredge had two state qualifiers and Coal Ridge had one.
