Skarda wins 3rd title at Collegiate Mountain Bike Championships
Alexis Skarda won her third straight USA Cycling Division II national title in women’s cross-country mountain biking Saturday in Beech Mountain N.C.
She beat the second-place finisher by almost four minutes with a time of 1 hour, 7 minutes, 55 seconds.
Jeff Sikes was the top finisher among CMU’s men, placing 10th.
The Mavericks sit in third place in the team standings, only six points behind the second-place team.
Today is the third and final day of the championships, which will feature the slalom race.
For only the second time in the program’s history, Colorado Mesa defeated Fort Lewis College dropping the Skyhawks 2-1 in Durango.
Alan Hernandez and Legofi Crawford scored second-half goals to give the Mavs a 2-0 lead, and they held on after Fort Lewis added a goal late in the second half.
Crawford leads the Mavericks with four goals this season.
Goalie Micah Conrads picked up three saves.
The Mavericks (8-4-3, 6-2-3 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) have won three straight games and are in fourth place in the conference.
They also haven’t lost in the past six games, dating back to a 1-0 loss to Metro State on Oct. 4.
The CMU men’s and women’s cross country teams competed in the RMAC Championships, with the men finishing ninth and the women finishing 10th.
Hayley Kremer paced the Mavericks’ women, finishing 38th with a time of 22:34.
Danny Vavrik led the men, finishing 28th with a time of 25:51.
